I stop riding

Road to Recumbency

I broke my left arm when I was seven years old. The break was very near the elbow. It damaged the growth plates at the elbow in the upper arm bone and so my upper arm didn't develop quite right. Gradually I developed arthritis.

Then I broke my left elbow again in a bike crash when I was 33. Over the next few years I began to develop nerve damage. I found I couldn't support myself with my arms for more than about 5 miles without numbness and joint pain.

On the theory that a more upright posture would unweight my elbow, I test rode mountain bikes and hybrids. They weren't really any better. Besides, they didn't (and still don't) really look like real bikes to me. I means, a real bike has drop handlebars, right?

Anyway, I stopped riding altogether.

True love
